Exhibiting at IBC2025

Hey everyone!

Like every year, the MistServer team will be exhibiting at IBC2025!
If you're planning on attending, be sure to drop by and say hi.
We’ll be happy to share our latest updates, upcoming plans or even steal a few great ideas from you if you've got them.

Our booth can be found at 5.F43

Note: IBC will charge for tickets unless you use a customer code.
Feel free to use ours: IBC6310. You’ll need this near the end of the signup process.

Using the code will make entry free, but also forward the information you enter during signup to us. We will send you a single "thank you" email and then throw that data away.

Here are just a few of the things we’ll be showcasing:

Presentation: Building your own media pipeline powered by Open Source software

Speaker: Jaron Viëtor
  Day: Sunday 14 Sep
  Time: 12:45-13:00
  Location: Hall 5 (5.A28)

Modular streaming platform powered by MistServer

Most streaming platforms lock you into their ecosystem. We do things differently and give you the keys.
MistServer is fully open source, and not only can you self-host your own platform, we actually recommend it.
Run and own everything yourself, yet be able to count on our team for support, advice and custom development.

Broadcast quality & encoding

MistServer has always focused on stream repackaging and internet distribution,
resulting in a robust server that supports nearly every streaming protocol.
However, one area we've been limited in is raw video signals and encoding.
That’s about to change. This year, we're introducing support for raw video signals such as SDI, NDI and (USB) webcams, along with encoding and decoding capabilities.
This means you can now build a complete studio-to-studio or studio-to-server contribution setup using just MistServer.

Updates & improvements

One of our most common questions: What’s new?
Fortunately, our changelog has the details, but feel free to ask us in person anyway. We’re always happy to talk shop!

Online documentation now available

Hello everyone,

Traditionally MistServer had a PDF available as a manual, which contained great amounts of information. Perhaps a little too great as the PDF itself became bigger and bigger, and perhaps slightly too unwieldy.

We've decided to convert the manual to an online environment, allowing easier small edits and improving general usability.

We've reached a point where the majority of the documentation is now available and updated. So we're happy to start redirecting towards it. You can find it here. We've now started adapting some of the blog posts into How-to guides as well. Of course a proper search method will have to follow as well.

We will eventually put the documentation online in Github as well so users can easily suggest edits or request pages. Until we've reached that point feel free to email comments, suggestions or requests to info@mistserver.com.

No worries for the PDF lovers out there, we will update the PDF at our usual irregular schedule.

MistServer independent once more

Hey all!

As most of you probably know, about a year and a half ago in October 2021, Livepeer acquired DDVTech (the company that is building MistServer).

The partnership enabled the open sourcing of a decentralized media server, combining the two technologies, which serves as the backbone for Livepeer’s streaming platform. By early 2023 Livepeer was seeing traction within its core web3-focused market, and decided to lean into building for and serving only this market. This meant potentially winding down the MistServer team and project. To prevent this from happening, Livepeer offered the MistServer team the opportunity to spin back out the project and focus on their own core activities: MistServer-related services and technologies. Not wanting to let the project die, and not wanting to let down all our customers and users that rely on MistServer for their day-to-day operations, we naturally decided to take this option.

So, I'm happy to now formally announce that as of March 2023, DDVTech has a new majority shareholder: "OptiMist Video". OptiMist Video is entirely owned by the engineers on the MistServer team. DDVTech will continue to provide services and products exactly as it has been, and the MistServer team continues to be employed by DDVTech.

This allows us to fully focus on MistServer and related services and technologies once more. We're looking forward to continuing to help our customers, including Livepeer, with their integrations/operations/products based on MistServer. We've enjoyed working on widely varied applications such as streaming platforms, rack encoders, self-driving cars and low latency videochat applications and are eager for more challenges in the future.

If you have any questions, you can reach us through all the usual channels, like our contact form.

MistServer has been acquired by Livepeer

Hey everyone,

DDVTech and the MistServer company has been acquired by Livepeer, Inc. If you want to read their own blogpost about the acquisition you can do so here.

To start things off, a quote from our CTO Jaron:

There could not be a more fitting team to work with, as Livepeer and DDVTech perfectly align in terms of philosophy and long-term goals. I’m looking forward to further growing both the MistServer product and the Livepeer brand in general, and bringing more exciting technologies to the open video infrastructure ecosystem. The resources and experience that the combined teams bring to the table open up a staggering amount of possibilities. This is a very exciting time for all of us.

  -Jaron Viëtor

So what does this mean for MistServer users and the future of MistServer?

There will be no changes to the product and service you are familiar with. The entire development team of MistServer is still intact and still working full-time on the MistServer project. You can keep talking to the points of contact you've been talking to so far. Commercial-related operations will gradually be transferred to the Livepeer team, so that the MistServer team can keep their focus on purely development and support related tasks.

The extra resources Livepeer is making available to us will allow us to accelerate development and provide you with an even better product and service going forward.

If you're worried about anything or have questions, we'd be happy to talk to you. You can reach out to the new commercial team at mist@livepeer.com, or reach the existing MistServer team through the usual methods (our contact form or directly to your existing point of contact).

Our plans for 2019

Hello everyone!

Happy new year! We would like to wish all everyone the very best for 2019.

With 2019 we will also enter the year where the MistServer project becomes 10 years old. It sure has been a long and eventful journey. We’ve got some exciting changes coming up, but first we’ll take a step back and look at the road we’ve travelled.

The MistServer project started in 2009, and was mostly developed behind closed doors, while being tested by a select few pilot customers.

In 2011 MistServer made it to the public on github, where we then released MistServer 0.1 with just progressive flash (FLV) support. Back then Flash was used for almost all website based video delivery. In just a few years time, this shifted to a complete opposite: now Flash is considered outdated and insecure. MistServer of course grew along with the industry, but we always kept backwards compatibility in place.

In 2014, the year of our 5th anniversary, we released MistServer 2.0. MistServer had grown to contain most modern and legacy protocols and was big enough for widespread use. It had turned into a media gateway capable of making any media available on any device.

We’re happy to report we’ve been growing ever since. Along the way we decided to make a MistServer Pro version, focussed on the enterprise market.

Now in 2019 we’ve decided to take another look at our current project and how it all started. We would like to give back to the community by extending the capabilities of our open source version, releasing some of the (until now) Pro-only features in the Open Source edition for our upcoming major update to 3.0. This year we will also update our website, and we have a few other exciting surprises planned to further celebrate our 10th anniversary!

Stick around for the ride, it’s going to be fun! 🎉

Introducing subscriptions

Hello everyone! We're happy to announce our shop now supports subscriptions.

When you select the subscription payment plan, you'll be charged for the first month. Then, when the month is up, a new license will automatically be created and paid for.
This means you will no longer have to worry about your licenses expiring.

You can cancel your subscription at any time. Your license will remain valid until its end date, but it will not be renewed and you will not be charged again.

If you currently have an active license and would like to subscribe from now on, you can click the Renew button from your Invoices overview and select the subscription payment plan. That will configure the cart to be filled with the settings of your previous order, starting at its end date.

If you have any questions or encounter any problems, please feel free to contact us.

Non-commercial license now available!

Hello everyone,

MistServer already had two licensing models available: the free open source edition and the paid enterprise (also known as "Pro") edition.
Starting today, we're adding a third option: the non-commercial license.

This new license is intended for non-commercial users, and can be used by anyone that is not using MistServer (directly or indirectly) to generate revenue. It contains all the great features and extras that the enterprise edition has, but in exchange for the non-commercial use only limitation the price has been lowered significantly. This edition is available for only $ 9.99 USD per month per instance.

Not sure if you're allowed to use the non-commercial edition for your intended use? Just contact us and we'll answer any questions you may have.

New prices effective September 9th, 2016

Streaming media is a very active and quickly developing area in IT. Because so many technological changes are happening every year, the marketplace changes as well. In order to stay relevant, DDVTech often adjusts their pricing schemes to match current market needs. At DDVTech we love doing what we do best: creating premium technology for users that know what they want. This means that in principle, MistServer and related services are geared towards enterprise and premium users. However, we noticed that enterprise-level customers often had requests and needs that we did not offer in our standard packages, and other things that we did offer were not very much in demand. As a natural result, we adjusted which packages and services we have in our standard offering.EnterpriseOur biggest changes in enterprise pricing is that at first we offered two different types of licenses: either per-instance or unlimited. We also made a difference in the ability to redistribute or not. In the new pricing scheme, all enterprise licenses are the same: unlimited instances, with distribution rights while the license is in effect. This comes at a static price, regardless of business size or instances used. We removed all extras from our base package, and now offer these as separate optional items, á la carte-style. We added a few new ones that were often requested as well. The following packages are available on a monthly basis:Commercial use license ($2,500 USD monthly; minimum 1 month):While this package is active, you are allowed to both use and distribute MistServer for commercial purposes. There is no use limit, no instance limit, no other hidden per-server fees of any kind. This package may be used either for the open source edition or the Pro edition, at no additional charge.Offline use ($2,500 USD monthly; minimum 1 month):Normally MistServer requires an active internet connection to remain functional. While this package is active, you can both use and distribute MistServer without an active internet connection required.48h patch service ($1,000 USD monthly; minimum 12 months):MistServer is extremely robust and rarely has issues. We are so confident of this, that we are willing to guarantee it. For mission-critical use, we offer this package. While active, it guarantees a fix or workaround for any suddenly encountered bugs or issues within 48 hours after notifying us.Tested appliance ($750 - $500 USD monthly each; minimum 3 months):For our customers that build appliances (either physical or virtual) that rely on MistServer, we offer this package. While active, you send us your appliance(s) and we test each new MistServer release against your appliance(s) for compatibility problems and other regressions. MistServer generally has a 3 month release interval, hence the 3 month minimum duration. Your first appliance is $750 USD per month, each additional appliance is $500 per month.Weekly expert call ($500 USD monthly; minimum 1 month):Our team really knows media, and we are willing to share that knowledge with you. Want to stay up to date on the latest developments? Share your ideas with us? Ask for advice? Want feedback on your platform? While this package is active, you will receive a planned weekly call from one of our engineers, during which you can talk about any of these things and more.Remote monitoring and assistance ($500 USD monthly per instance; minimum 1 month):While this package is active, you will receive access to a web panel showing you server vital statistics over time. Additionally, we will actively monitor your server for problems and assist in resolving them if they occur.Besides the above monthly packages, we also offer these two one-off packages:Custom development ($200 USD hourly):Want custom features? Want us to integrate something with MistServer for you? Other MistServer-related programming needs? Of course you can extend MistServer yourself, but with this package you can get the team that knows MistServer best to do custom development for you. This is always done on a per-project basis, at a fixed paid-in-advance price with a fixed deadline. Contact us for details.Event support ($1250 USD per day per person, plus expenses):Organising a one-off event? Have a big release coming up? Migrating your entire platform? With this package you can hire the assistance of our engineers on a per-day basis (either on-site or remote), to ensure everything will go smoothly. In the event that anything goes wrong, they will do required patches for you on the spot at no extra cost. Contact us for details.Special offer for new customersIn the past we have offered free trial periods, but we noticed that the first steps of starting to use MistServer are often confusing for our new users because of how radically different MistServer is. For this reason, we decided to stop our free trial policy and replace it with something else.Of course we are excited about new projects and new customers. Often a media server is usually a vital part of your platform or solution which means that changing it or replacing it is a risky undertaking. In recognition of this, we have a special offer for new customers.Usually an integration flows through three phases. In the first phase a proof of concept is made, showing that everything will work. In phase two the integration is completed. In the final phase maintenance and optimizations happen. Especially the first phase can require a lot of manpower: you need to build up expertise, solve the major problems, etcetera. In the second phase it's mostly polish, and in the final phase regular maintenance will ensure your system has no downtime. To assist in this process, we are willing to co-invest in the first phase. Normally, the commercial use license and most of our optional services for a three month period would cost up to $13.500,00 USD, but new customers get all of this for a one-time fee of $4.500,00 USD. After those three months, you will see your working proof of concept and can decide to continue with MistServer or not, no strings attached.During this first period we will work closely with you and discover if you will need any custom development (and if so, how much) and what optional services you need, making sure the transition to MistServer is as smooth as possible. Your eventual monthly cost will be somewhere between the above mentioned initial special offer prize and our normal price for all optional services enabled.Naturally these special offers take a lot of time of our team, and because of this we can only offer it to a limited amount of new customers each month. Please contact us to find out if there are any spots still open and we will give you full details as well as answer any questions you may have.
